The best way to identify the size is to take a length of thread or string, wrap it around your finger and measure the length in millimetres
Then, take a calculator and divide this number by 3.14 and it will give you the approximate size in millimetres.
If you haven't got a calculator, then just divide the length by 3 and this will give you the "about size"
